Make This Your Best Trip Ever
Tybee Island is located 18 miles east of Savannah. This small barrier island boasts a 3-mile long beach backed by sea oat-covered sand dunes. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing and frolicking in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Tybee means "salt" to Native Americans, but the name of this low-key seaside town now brings to mind words such as "sun," "surf," and "fun". The south end of the island features a pier and pavilion, a splendid venue for strolling above the ocean, people-watching and fishing.
While Tybee is a resort town complete with a full range of restaurants, modern hotels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages, it's also a residential area stocked with its share of colorful characters. The atmosphere is considerably more laid-back than that of larger beach towns to the north and south.
Welcome to Tybee Island
While Tybee is a resort town complete with a full range of restaurants, modern hotels and motels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages, it's also a residential area stocked with its share of colorful characters. It's an atmosphere considerably more laid-back than that of glitzier, larger beach towns to the north and south.
There are many recreation activities on Tybee Island for everyone! Whether you are here for the day or taking a longer vacation, Tybee Island offers a range of things to do.
Tybee Island Light Station
Ordered in 1732 by General James Oglethorpe, founder of Georgia as the 13th colony, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners’ safe entrance into the Savannah River for almost 300 years.
The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact lighthouses, maintaining all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. Rebuilt several times, the current lighthouse has 178 stairs and a First Order Fresnel lens which stands nine feet tall. A tour of the lighthouse and museum is the perfect way to add a little history to your vacation!
Tybee Island Marine Science Center
Currently positioned on the south end of the island, the Marine Science Center will soon be moving to a new location on the north end. The Center is co-sponsored by the Tybee Island Marine Science Foundation, the City of Tybee Island, and NOAA Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
The Center is focused on wildlife conservation in Coastal Georgia and education surrounding it. This is a great spot for families and groups!
Fort Pulaski National Monument
First completed in 1847, Fort Pulaski was converted into a cannon-testing site and prisoner-of-war camp in 1862 during the American Civil War.
This historic site offers visitors and guests daily interpretive programs including guided fort tours ( 40-50 min.) and musket and soldier demonstrations (15-30 min.) Cannon-firing demonstrations are held on Saturdays.
Tybee Island Pier & Pavilion
Located just off U.S. Highway 80 at the end of Tybrisa Street. Besides its spectacular view and great fishing location, it's also a meeting place used for dances, musical performances, and special events.
On the premises are picnic tables, snack bars, and public restrooms. Various festivals and events are held here throughout the year. Open daily.
